I've worked in larger commercial shops and as much as I love the work I hated the atmosphere. In most commercial shops animals are booked for appointments as close as every 30 min to an hour apart. They spend hours at a time sitting surrounded by other barking, stressed out dogs in the kennels bedside, above and beneath them. Stressed out groomers are racing to get as many dogs done as they can in a day because the more they do the more $ they make. While its not a bad concept to make more money it is dreadful to be so driven or pushed by the corporate money mongers that we lose sight of the animals. Commercial shops don't cater primarily to the animals needs and comfort. They don't work at the animals pace and they don't respect the animals well defined boundaries.
I became a Pet Groomer because I have always loved working with animals. They need pampering and attention as much as we do. There is no more rewarding and fulfilling experience then to see the way these 4 legged furr babies light up after their grooming is complete. Even those who have been abused in the past and are downright difficult to groom always seem to brighten up and give tons of kisses when their spa experience is complete.
Here at 4 paws we cater to the animals needs. Comfort and enjoyment in the experience is paramount. We NEVER muzzle a dog without permission. We do NOT cage dry unless the animal absolutely cannot or will not tolerate the hand drying process. We do not "clip" nails we file and buff them. There are several reasons for this. 1) a nail clipper causes pressure throughout the nail and this is uncomfortable for the pet. 2) There is a greater risk of cutting too short and hitting the vein inside the nail called "the quick". Also painful to your pet. 3) Clipping the nails causes them to become much sharper then they were before and can result in severe injury to themselves and their human companions. Filing and buffing is all around a safer and more desirable option for your pet. Some pets however do not tolerate the tool required to do this and those pets will need clipping done. But over all 99% of the pets we work with tolerate the process quite well. Cats nails cannot be done this way and will always be clipped.
